Signs of a Weak Car Battery and How to Choose the Right Size

A car battery is getting weak when the engine is slow to start or the starter sounds heavy, the lights dim when cranking, or the electrics cut out on their own. If you notice these signs, have the battery checked before the car breaks down. When replacing it, choose a battery with the same size and terminal position as your car's specification.

Signs your car battery is getting weak

  1. Heavy starter or slow starting, especially in the morning or after the car has been parked for a long time.
  2. Dashboard lights and screen dim while the engine is cranking.
  3. Electrical problems: a weak horn, slow power windows, or a clock and audio that keep resetting.
  4. The battery warning light stays on while the engine runs. This can point to the battery or to the charging system (alternator), so have it checked at a workshop.
  5. Physical changes: a swollen case, leaking fluid, or terminals covered in white-green corrosion.
  6. The battery is getting old. Many car batteries last around 2 to 3 years, depending on use. Frequent short trips, heavy traffic, or a car that sits unused tend to wear a battery out faster.

One sign alone does not always mean the battery must be replaced. A mechanic can check the battery's voltage and condition, and the charging system, to be sure.

What to do if your battery suddenly weakens

  • If the car still starts, drive it straight to a workshop. Avoid switching the engine off somewhere hard to reach.
  • If the car will not start, the battery can be jump-started with jumper cables from another car. The usual order: red cable to the (+) terminal of the weak battery, then to the (+) terminal of the donor battery; black cable to the (-) terminal of the donor battery, then to a bare, unpainted metal part in the engine bay of the stalled car, away from the battery. Remove them in reverse order. Do not jump-start a battery that is swollen or leaking, and for hybrid or ISS cars follow the jump points in the owner's manual.
  • Switch off unnecessary electrical loads, such as the AC and audio, until the battery has been checked. Keep on the lights you need for safety, such as the headlights at night.

How to read a battery size code

Most Japanese cars in Indonesia use JIS battery size codes, such as 34B19R or 46B24R. Here is how to read them:

  • The first number (34, 46): the battery's performance rating. A higher number usually means more capacity and starting power.
  • The letter (B): the width and height group.
  • The next number (19, 24): the approximate length in centimetres.
  • The last letter (R or L): the terminal position. R and L batteries cannot simply be swapped, because the car's battery cables may not reach or may end up reversed.

Some sizes also have older names that shops still use, such as NS60 for the 46B24R size. If a seller uses a different name, match it to the size code.

Cars with start-stop (ISS) or hybrid systems usually need a special battery. For these cars, do not swap in a regular battery without checking the specification.

How to choose the right replacement

  1. Start from the factory specification. Check the old battery, the owner's manual, or use the battery finder by car brand, model, and year. For example, the Toyota Avanza from 2016 to 2020 uses size 34B19R for the Standard option.
  2. Choose the level. Yarra offers three options:
    • Standard: matches the factory specification.
    • Upgrade: larger capacity, suited to cars with many accessories or heavy use.
    • Upgrade Calcium: stronger starting power, lower water loss, and longer life.
  3. Make sure it fits and the terminals match. A larger battery must still fit the tray, with the terminals in the same position.
  4. Check the production date. A battery that has sat in storage too long may already be weak before use.
